Trauma-Informed Legal Services

For attorneys who work directly with victims of crime, understanding the complexity and specialized nature of trauma is imperative to providing competent and diligent representation. When a client is seeking legal services after a traumatic event their engagement is impacted significantly by the long-lasting neurobiological impacts of trauma. An attorney who does not understand the impact of trauma may find a client’s trauma symptoms to be insurmountable hurdles. This training will help you be able to recognize these behaviors as symptoms of trauma, rather than antagonistic or intentional choices of a client. Traumatic events can create lasting changes to a victim’s brain, resulting in challenges with communication, memory, organization, and interpersonal boundaries. This training will help attorneys competently respond to the unique needs of survivors, and to communicate in a way that ensure clients are fully able to participate in their representation and will help develop concrete skills on how to proactively manage the impact of trauma when working with victims to ensure there are providing ethical and trauma-informed legal services.
