OCTOBER 21, 2020
12 - 1:30 PM
This advanced training will provide attorneys with a deeper understanding of the ethical
considerations they should take into account when working with clients who are experiencing
trauma. A brief overview of the neurobiology of trauma will be provided, but the emphasis of
this training is on developing skills to provide effective and ethical representation to clients with
trauma. Topics will include setting and maintaining boundaries, communication considerations,
responding to client emotions, victim-centered representation, and how to present challenging
information in a trauma-informed manner. We will also discuss the impact of vicarious trauma.
After this training, attorneys will be better able to recognize these client behaviors as symptoms
of trauma, rather than antagonistic choices of a client, and have additional tools to address those
behaviors. Through this training, an attorney will be able to identify this trauma symptom as
such and be better equipped to competently and diligently represent a client facing these
challenges, rather than identify the client as a challenge themselves. Attorneys attending this
training will learn concrete skills on how to proactively manage the impact of working with
victims and decrease the risk of their own burnout.
This training is geared specifically designed to build on the information learned in the Trauma-
Informed Legal Services webinar presented by RMvlc each quarter.
This training has been approved for 1 General and 1 Ethics CLE.
